On my first trip to Lucknow, I misjudged the area. I stayed in the vicinity of the newly developed business sector, close to the malls and wide roads, since it seemed convenient on the map. This did work quite well because the hotel was hygienic, the traffic was manageable, and I spent most of my time riding autos to find something worth visiting. For my second visit, however, I decided to stay in the old part of town. This made all the difference.
What Lucknow’s geography actually looks like?
Lucknow is comprised of the old and new parts of the city. The old city is located in the northern and eastern parts of Lucknow. It is characterised by architecture dating back to the Nawabi era, decades-old kebab shops, and narrow streets that are best explored on foot at a leisurely pace.
Meanwhile, the new city of Lucknow lies to the south and west of the old part of the city. It features wide roads, shopping centres, business hotels, and contemporary surroundings that reflect the city’s ongoing development. Both parts of the city have their pros and cons. However, if you are a visitor wanting to understand the city rather than just see its attractions, the old city is where the real experience lies.
Aminabad: The neighbourhood that makes the most sense
Aminabad is one of Lucknow’s oldest commercial areas, sitting close to the historic core of the city. It is dense, busy, and full of everything that makes Lucknow feel like Lucknow. The area is lined with textile shops, perfume sellers, chaat stalls, and old buildings with ornate facades. It also has the feel of a neighbourhood that has remained true to its character for generations.
Staying near Aminabad puts Tunday Kababi nearby. It puts the chaat stalls and the kachori shops within reach on a slow evening when you do not want to organise transport. I stayed in a mid-range property just off the main Aminabad lanes on my second visit. The room was modest and the location made up for everything.
Hazratganj: The middle ground that works for most visitors
Hazratganj is a market area in the heart of Lucknow that was built during the time of the British. Thus, many ancient architectural features can still be observed here today. It is located between the historical part of Lucknow and newer areas of the city, making Hazratganj an ideal starting point for sightseeing.
Getting to other parts of Lucknow from Hazratganj is easy and convenient. The old city is just a short auto-rickshaw ride to the north, while contemporary restaurants and cafés are near to the south. For a first-time visitor who wants comfort and access in equal measure, Hazratganj is probably the most sensible option.
The Old City lanes around Chowk: For the committed traveller
The area surrounding Chowk Bazaar and Bara Imambara is the historical core of Lucknow. It is the site of the greatest Nawabi architecture density, a place where food shops start work at dawn, and sheermal comes hot from the tandoor before daybreak.
Being here allows one to experience the cultural heart of the city. It is much noisier, narrower, and considerably less refined compared to Hazratganj or Gomti Nagar. Chowk lanes are not designed for tourists but rather for community life that is interesting to observe.
I would love to stay here the next time I visit simply to enjoy the morning food. I can literally get sheermal before 8 a.m., while still getting to my guesthouse comfortably.
How to select hotels in Lucknow?
When it comes to planning a food and culture trip, comfort, especially regarding hotels in Lucknow, does not equal convenience. Instead, you want to find the hotels that are most conveniently located in the part of Lucknow that is bustling with life. A property near Aminabad or Hazratganj with a helpful front desk, Wi-Fi, and a peaceful room is genuinely enough.
The bottom line
Pick the area first and then choose the hotel. In Lucknow, that decision shapes every detail of your stay. Choose the area based on whether you want to experience the old city and enjoy great food.
Hazratganj is a compromise between comfort and access, while Chowk should be your destination only if you are interested in the old town and the famous breakfast culture. If you are in Lucknow for business, choose Gomti Nagar.
